Charter of Human Rights

The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (the Charter) gives legal recognition and protection in Victoria to many important human rights, particularly civil and political rights.

The Charter imposes legal duties and responsibilities on public authorities and their employees. It is unlawful for a public authority to act in a way that is incompatible with a human right or, in making a decision, to fail to give proper consideration to a relevant human right.

The Department of Treasury and Finance is committed to upholding the spirit of the Charter and employees are obliged to give thorough consideration to the Charter when making decisions.

The Charter is available at www.legislation.vic.gov.au

You can obtain further information on the Charter from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission

If you would like to make a comment on proposed legislation, in relation to human rights or any other issues, you can do so through the Annual Statement of Government Intentions
