Work and career opportunities

DTF’s central, influential role in government provides challenge and stimulation. The diverse functions DTF performs and the Department’s attitude to staff development provide the opportunity to grow and to contribute.

Due to DTF’s small size, staff at all levels have the opportunity to work on significant projects and take on responsibility relatively early in their career, working directly with Ministers, senior managers, and staff from other departments. In addition, many staff have benefited from internal transfer and promotion opportunities and from secondments, building skills and expertise across a variety of functions.

Our size

At around 600 staff, DTF is a relatively small government department. This makes for a friendly work environment where you have opportunities to meet and influence senior people and feel more connected to the whole of DTF.

Location

All staff work in the CBD, either in the historic Treasury Reserve precinct or the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street.

Most DTF staff work in the Treasury Reserve precinct. The Government Services Group is based at 120 Collins Street, while the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission Secretariat is located at 55 Collins Street.

Travel to work by public transport is convenient, with Parliament train station and tram lines at our doorstep. If you prefer to cycle or walk, bicycle parking and showers are available.

Treasury Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens are a great place for a lunchtime stroll or picnic lunch. For joggers, the ‘tan’ is just across the river. For foodies (and caffeine addicts!) the options for eating and drinking are endless.

Work-life balance

DTF staff report that work-life balance is not just talked about but acted on. Many staff utilise flexible work and leave options to suit their lifestyle or commitments. These include:
  • non-standard working hours;
  • part-time work;
  • telecommuting arrangements;
  • carers, ceremonial/religious, compassionate and parental leave;
  • leave purchasing;
  • annual leave in single days; and
  • extended long service, maternity and annual leave on a half-pay basis.

Salary and benefits

Most DTF staff are employed under the conditions of the current Victorian Public Service Agreement . The Agreement provides details of salaries at each VPS level.
